May 1971: FBI agent Dennis Condon opens an informant file on Whitey Bulger, but Whitey backs off after one conversation. The file goes cold.

September 1975: The first official meeting between Whitey Bulger and FBI agent John Connolly takes place.

February 1976: Bulger and Stevie Flemmi, a longtime FBI informant, are officially confirmed as top-echelon informants.

1978: Whitey Bulger comes under investigation for race-fixing; the FBI puts his informant status on hold. O’Sullivan, Morris, and Connolly conspire to remove him from suspicion.

1981: Bulger orders the Roger Wheeler murder, carried out by John Martorano in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
